What's happening in the Carolina Children's Garden? New!! Follow us on Blogspot

On January 21, 2012, children and parents dissected barn owl pellets finding the skeletons of voles, rats, mice, shrews, and birds and learning about the diet and distribution of prey in the raptor's territory.

On a rainy Arbor Day  December 7th Caleb and his sister Emily and their mom Irene helped Tim Nafziger plant a gingko tree in Mesozoic Memories Dinosaur Garden. Children received a loblolly pine seedling to plant at home. Special thanks to Glenn  Cooper of Cooper's Nursery for donating the male gingko to the garden and to weatherman Daniel Bonds for covering our event on WLTX news. 

Kevin Smith's construction class at Heyward Career and Technical High School came through once again! Students in the ROW (Richland One Works) program built six new picnic tables for the children's garden. Over the past few years Heyward students have cut our Pooh characters, made our wooden wheelbarrows,  cut and assembled our wren house kits. Thanks to teachers and students for the wonderful work and partnership!

On a cool crisp fall morning youth enjoyed a tree scavenger hunt to identify common trees and discover how trees tell us their age. This program was on November 12, 2011.

March 25, 2010:  Spring Cleaning in the Garden
Master Gardener volunteers gathered to sweep away traces of winter and prepare the Garden for spring!

Winter Solstice Observance
Learn about astronomy and the changing seasons; take a nature walk to observe winter's approach; make-and-take a calendar to help track changes in the natural world. Monday, December 21, Noon  - 1:30 pm, $2 per child supplies fee. Limit 15; register via e-mail (carolinachildrensgarden@ gmail.com) or phone (803-459-3212). Recommended for ages 5-12, but all are welcome.


Holiday Celebration
Tuesday, December 22, 3:30 - 5:00 pm, FREE; drop-ins welcome. Join us for games, caroling, crafts, and refreshments to celebrate the Christmas season!
